As someone who’s been online for half her life, I can certainly appreciate the broad spectrum that is Internet safety. From protecting kids from predators online to protecting your PC from viruses, it’s all important. I think I have an especially concerned outlook for my sister and my future kids because I know exactly what I was doing, to whom I was talking and what I was saying. Let me put it this way: I was definitely a curious kid.
Now that the Internet’s well established and people like myself are parents, we have the understanding of the Internet. Perhaps it’s a fear or a hard-learned respect, but we know what to expect and want to protect younger generations and, hopefully, instill a lesson on them that they will pass on to their kids. You might say that we need to protect them the way the Lorax wants to protect the forest.
That’s why I definitely believe in campaigns like the Growing Up Online Campaign from NBC and partners. Even if you’re not a parent or you’ve already discusses online habits or you use software to protect your hardware and children, it’s a good refresher. Things change, and what you’re doing may not be enough anymore. The image below, for example, opens a PDF that lists 6 tips to kids safe online, including keeping track of apps your children might be using and limiting the time they spend online.
