5 Things You Need to Know Before Seeing Deadpool

Folks, if you haven’t seen Deadpool’s movie already, what are you waiting for? It’s been out three whole days and you’re slacking!

Judging by the packed theater I was in, many peolple aren’t. And those two hours packed a ton of laughter, violence, innuendos and more. I got my money’s worth and then some!

Going into it, I knew enough about Deadpool to know what to expect, and I couldn’t be happier with the movie I got. If you’re not familiar with Deadpool, you might not realize what you’re in for, and it seems like this is the main reason people didn’t love the movie.

So without further ado, the following information can help you fall in love (or lust?) with Deadpool before you see his movie, or it might convince you that you don’t want to see the movie after all.

1. He’s Not a Superhero

Deadpool does a good job of explaining this in the movie, but it’s something you need to understand because it’s this very thing that makes the character and his media not family friendly. Seriously, don’t take your kids. And if you do, don’t complain about the gratuitous violence or sex because that’s what Deadpool is all about. I wasso happy this movie was an R rating so that we could experience all of this!

2. He’s Not Exactly an Anti-Hero, Either

Some people will argue that Deadpool is an antihero, but this has always indicated some sort of character development to me. Think Han Solo. But that’s not what we have here. Deadpool arguably starts out a little better (if a mentally unstable alcoholic who fucks people up for cold, hard cash is “better”) than he ends up, but he’s always been the merc with the mouth. This makes him hilarious but not lovable. Look elsewhere for your redemption story.

3. Deadpool Pays Homage to Those Who Come Before

Deadpool’s red suit isn’t colored as such specifically so it’s harder to see him bleed. It’s modeled after the Spidey suit. Furthermore, there’s a reason Wade Wilson might sound familiar: it’s a play on DC’s Slade Wilson. From poking fun of typical plotlines or scripts to telling the viewer/reader what’s coming next, Deadpool makes fun of the entire genre. A breath of fresh air if you ask me!

4. He’s Pansexual

This doesn’t really come up in the movie, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Deadpool likes sex and sexy people regardless of gender or gender identity. This would maybe make him a more contemporary or “better” character than even some characters in your real life.. if it weren’t for all that pesky murder. Ryan Reynolds has even said that he wants Deadpool to have a boyfriend in the next movie, which is just another way this isn’t your typical comic book movie.

5. He Breaks the Fourth Wall

That’s right, folks. Deadpool talks directly to the reader, gamer or viewer, which makes him the perfect narrator for his own movie or video games. It’s amazing how well this transfer to the big screen from the written page, and  I think the writers did a great jo with it in his movie. Plus, Deadpool as a narrator means that we get backstory in a humorous way that feels natural to the plot. In the comics, Deadpool’s knowledge of his existence in these media actually pains him. Awww. Or not!

There’s a ton to know about Deadpool,which hopefully means he gets more character development and screen time. Judging from how well the movie has already done, I don’t think we have anything to worry about, however!
